Library Induction for Postgraduates

Part 1: Introduction to Library Resources and Services

The first part of the induction programme will provide new postgraduate students with a comprehensive overview of the HKU Libraries’ (HKUL) resources and services supporting their learning and research studies. It will also highlight important literacy concepts that students are required to further develop.

Two information sessions are specifically designed for all newly enrolled postgraduate students, including taught postgraduate (TPG) and research postgraduate (RPG) students. They are named  Module 1: Foundations of Information Search and Literacy, and Module 2: Research Support and Scholarly Communications

In this module, students will explore foundational concepts, tools, and strategies that will help them navigate the resources and services available at the University Libraries and beyond. Students will be given an introduction on:

  ● Types of library collections and how to identify and locate them
  ● Retrieval of literature/information via Find@HKUL and other tools/applications
  ●  Academic integrity and ethical use of information
  ● Support on AI literacy available at the Libraries

Module 1 helps students to lay the foundations to embark on a successful academic journey with resources at the Libraries, and it is highly recommended for  all postgraduate students

The second module builds upon the foundations in information search and literature review established in Module 1, delving into the Libraries’ resources and support available for various aspects of the research cycle. Students will gain understanding on:

  ● Importance of research data management and related university regulations
  ● Brief process of scholarly publishing and definitions of open access-related concepts
  ●  Why and how to measure research impact and responsible use of research metrics
  ●
Research and academic integrity

Module 2 is essential for postgraduate students who aim to conduct research projects, write dissertations and theses, and effectively communicate the value and impact of their research output within the academic community.  Research postgraduate (RPg) students are strongly recommended to attend.

Part 2: Discovering HKUL

This tour is designed to familiarize newly enrolled students with the Main Library and branch libraries’ locations, as well as the various facilities and collections available for different study purposes.

It begins with a brief presentation,  covering the essentials of library facilities, services, and locations. Then participants will embark on a guided walk through the Main Library, gaining an up-close and personal experience of the various library study spaces, collections, and resources.

All students are welcome!

Part 3: Information Literacy Workshop

This is an interactive, task-based hands-on workshop designed to equip students with essential skills for building effective search statements and evaluating information in today’s digital world. Through practical information search tasks, participants will learn to:

  ● Establish effective search queries and statements

● Distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources

●  Assess the credibility of information

In this workshop, students will be divided into groups and work on tasks to develop search statements using appropriate keywords, operators, and filters, as well as navigate and utilize a variety of information sources, including but not limited to search engines, databases, and Generative AI, i.e., HKU ChatGPT. Students are expected to work, analyze, and reflect on their answers by presenting via the Miro board ( https://miro.com/).

It is strongly recommended to postgraduate students !
